10 things you should always have in your swim bag for training:
- 2 pairs of swimming trunks/swimsuits
It probably goes without saying that you should have swimsuits or trunks in your swim bag (because what else would you swim in?). The most important thing is to bring two, so that if you forget one at home, you always have an extra.
It's rarely a good idea to borrow someone else's swimwear, as it never fits properly, which can almost ruin the entire workout. If you need new training clothes, here at Watery.ie you can find a large selection of both tracksuits and track pants.
- A water bottle

A swimmer's best friend! Isn't that what they say? So of course you should have one in your swim bag!
- 2 towels
Who wants to dry off in a wet and soaked towel? Not us, anyway, so always remember to bring 2 towels - just in case you forget to put in a new one.
- 2 pairs of goggles
Swimming without goggles is no fun, and you can't have a good and effective workout without them! Completely red eyes are both annoying and irritating in many ways, which is why you should always have two pairs of goggles in case the elastic of one pair breaks (unfortunately, it happens from time to time). You can also find plenty of inspiration for your next pair of goggles on this page.
- Energy tabs/protein powder
Energy during training is suuuuper important! That's why you should have some energy tabs in your swim bag that you can add to the water in your hydration point. This way you can get extra energy while you train. You should also have some kind of protein drink for after training, so you can top up your energy levels immediately!
- Indoor shoes
Do you probably also do land training/strength training before your swim training? If so, you should always bring a pair of indoor shoes so you don't have to train in bare feet - it's not quite as good.
- Shorts and t-shirt
The most essential item in your entire swim bag! Shorts and T-shirts should never be forgotten. That's just the way it is. I would always recommend having shorts, T-shirts, socks, indoor shoes, etc. in your bag.
- 2 bathing caps
- Foam Roller
Stretching is super important! And the best way to do this is with a foam roller. With a foam roller, you can “roll away” all the hard and sore muscles. Bloody clever!
- Elastic bands
Shoulder and injury prevention training is super important for swimmers. That's why you should always have an elastic band with you so you can do different exercises to prevent possible injuries.
And then to the 10 things you should ALWAYS have in your swim bag for competitions:
- Competition swimming trunks/swimsuit
What did you imagine? Swimming in your bikini swimsuit or your triangular speedos? It won't work at competitions, which is why you should always make sure you've remembered your competition swimsuit or trunks. You can't do it without them.
- Competition swim goggles
With a pair of these in your swim bag at a swim meet, you'll never go wrong. At least you'll have something to swim with.
- Competition swim cap
Even if you don't have the longest hair, you should still wear a swim cap at competitions (unless you're bald). It simply makes you faster, which is why you should always remember your swim cap for competitions.
- Energy bars/recovery bars
Yes, there's not much time between races at swim meets, so you need to be able to get some energy quickly. And you can do that with some energy bars. So don't forget those too!

- Three water bottles
Yep, three of them. You always lose at least one water bottle per day at a swim meet (they just disappear out of the blue), so you should always be prepared. You can't survive a whole weekend in a boiling swimming pool without water. Period.
- Mum and Dad
In the form of your phone. If things go well, they should always get a call right away, and if they don't, they're also the ones you can cry to. So don't forget your phone in your swim bag!
- Giant lunch bag
We swimmers must have enough to eat and drink. This means, among other things, that you should always have plenty of hot chocolate, pasta salad, muesli bars, etc. in your food bag. That way, you'll never run out of food.
- Indoor shoes
Again, without indoor shoes, it just won't work. At the very least, just some sandals or something, if that.
- Long trousers and jumpers
It's all about staying warm. So you should always wear either long trousers or a larger overshirt. Even inside a tropical swimming pool.
- Good Mood
This is probably the most important thing to have in your swim bag. Without a good mood, you can't do it. Happy swimmers swim the fastest. And that's just the way it is.
With these 20 tips for your swim bag, you should be ready for your next training session or swim meet. Have fun!
